Volunteer opportunities on Helium

Interested in helping us become the premier Writer's website? Here's what we have available.

Helium's Channel Managers

Do you know all about antique automobiles or about being an entrepreneur? Helium’s Channel Managers are members just like you who are passionate about sharing experience and wisdom! Come help shape areas of Helium by recruiting new writers, monitoring subject coverage and encouraging the creation of the best quality content on your subject on the web.

Channel Managers form the social ribbon that ties Helium’s large writing community together. Through mentoring, member communication and outreach, Channel Managers present the helpful, public face of Helium to the world.

Among a Channel Manager’s toolkit are a specially designed Dashboard that provides insight into each channel’s activity, increased onsite messaging capabilities as well as moderation status for group discussions.

Among a Channel Manager’s rewards are recognition in the form of special badges, a title and the Channel Manager’s image and bio featured on his or her channel home page. As a Channel Manager, you’ll also have access to the Senior Steward Team and Helium staff for mentoring and support.

Requirements: Demonstrated subject matter expertise, effective communication and team-building skills.

The Editorial Advisory Board (EAB)

The Editorial Advisory Board (EAB)  is our editorial front line. These members scour new and existing articles and titles to ensure a high level of editorial quality on Helium. The EAB provides tools to empower the community to lead that charge.

Here are the current EAB programs:

  • New Article Reviewers: Do you enjoy the detail work of close editorial reading? These volunteers review new articles submitted to the site to ensure they meet Helium’s Writing Standards, clean up small typos, edit out self-promotion, as well as respond to writers who need help and those who deserve praise. Special sensitivity to new member contact is required. Reviewers with demonstrated expertise in niche areas can focus on channel-specific content. Requirements: Pass a test, interview (for some – demonstrated subject matter expertise as well).
  • Title-seeders: These volunteers want to develop content areas and understand how to write SEO-effective titles. Familiarity with Helium’s title patterns and AP style is needed. Requirements: Test, brief orientation and training period, subject matter expertise an added benefit.
  • Fact-checkers: Do inaccuracies drive you nuts? Fact-checkers enjoy digging into the meat of articles. They’re willing to do the detail work of checking factual information, working with members to correct fixes and follow up with staff when members do not fix their articles. Requirements: Test, trainer interview, subject matter expertise (preferred).
